National Native American Awareness Month is to honor and recognize all Native, Indigenous, and Aboriginal tribes of not only the Americas but in all the world. Four years prior to 1990, the U.S. Congress had enacted legislation designating “American Indian Heritage Week.” On August 3, 1990, a Joint Resolution designated the month of November, 1990, as “National American Indian Heritage Month.” During this month, the contributions of the continent’s first inhabitants are remembered and celebrated through ceremonies, powwows, and special feasts.

Notable Native Americans:
Charles Curtis
- Kaw senator and Vice President of the United States
(1929-33).

Billy Mills - In the 1964 Olympic Games he outpaced the competition in the last 100 meters of the 10,000-meter race and took home a gold. He was the first American to win that event, and he also set an Olympic record.

N. Scott Mornaday - Kiowa and Cherokee poet, author, scholar, and painter.

Will Rogers - Actor and humorist known as a home-spun, straight-talking cowboy philosopher. His films include Guile of Woman (1921), The Headless Horseman (1922) and A Connecticut Yankee (1931).
