PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Shaw proactively seeks to develop its minority workforce into positions of leadership. Professional development programs currently geared towards minority, hourly and female employees include:

REACH – Reaching Employees to Achieve Company Heights
REACH is designed to develop Shaw's hourly minority workforce into leadership positions. The six weekly sessions teach hourly employees about supervision, leadership, and how to prepare for future opportunities with Shaw. Through formal classroom training and individual one-on-one coaching and mentoring, participants enhance their individual skills. Bilingual candidates are strongly recommended and Shaw proactively searches for minority and Hispanic employees for this program.

Relief Supervisor Certification
The program provides training to employees who fill in as relief supervisors. Certification includes training on leadership skills, communication skills, teambuilding, and an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a successful Relief Supervisor.

Language Instruction
Language instruction is provided for employees to learn both English and Spanish to close the communication gap in the workplace. Based on the language proficiency of the individual, training may range from Basic English for New Employees to the Shaw Language Exchange, an immersion program for both languages. Language training is available in a blended learning experience that includes both instructor-led classroom training as well as computer-based training.

  • Shaw Language Exchange (SLX)
SLX is designed so that for every salaried employee who comes to training to learn Spanish, an hourly associate from the same facility comes to learn English. The two participants are then paired together during the post-classroom phase to practice their new languages and strengthen cultural understanding.

  • Basic English for New Employees (BENE)
This 21-hour English language training program is for new employees who, during orientation, demonstrate a need for greater English proficiency before going to their jobs at their plants. Participants study work-specific terms and language assisting in their careers at Shaw. Computer-based and instructor-assisted lessons include common workplace commands, materials, tools and equipment that assist in an employee's safety and productivity.
